The Virgin Birth

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (Matthew 1:23 ESV)

The average birth rate for the whole world is 20.3 per year per 1000 total population, which for a world population of 6.6 billion comes to 134 million babies per year. This calculates out to 255 babies born every minute. Certainly the world is more populated now that it was in the hour Mary gave birth to Jesus. The uniqueness of her birth was that she was a virgin and Jesus was the Only Begotten Son of God. She knew God by the Holy Spirit and had never known a man. (Matthew 1:20) So of all the births throughout the ages hers was a birth of a baby through a virgin womb. The Word of God is true and the facts in history and medical science point to this miracle birth. This birth changed the course of humanity forever. It impacted society more so than the fall in the Garden of Eden.

Jesus came into this world through a virgin’s womb in a barn where animals were fed and sheltered. There was not a place for them to stay so they found a barn to give birth to Jesus. Angels praised Him and made announcements to the shepherds all around. Christ had been born, Glory to the Highest. This wonder of birth added to the already magnificent truth of God’s promises to mankind. The reason for this was that Jesus was a fulfillment and a hope that became a very present help in a time of need. (Psalm 46:1) His life was spent with Mary and Joseph until the beginning of His public ministry. He served mankind through to the fullest, expressing God’s love and hope for a sinful world. Jesus did not come normally as one would think His entrance was miracle and His life actively portrayed the miraculous. Even at His death He continued to prove that He was the Word that was made flesh. At His Ascension He left this earth miraculously and now is interceding for us before the Father in heaven. (Hebrews 7:25) When He returns His entrance will be miraculous and His reign will be forever and ever.

The birth through the virgin’s womb put no claim on what man could do or any ownership of this child called Immanuel. He was brought into this world as God’s Son and the lineage of humanity was continued. His approval of His Son given at the birth and also at the baptism in the River Jordon by John. (Luke 3:22) All should resound a praise and a great hallelujah for the birth of Jesus Christ. He, Himself, has made the world and all the heavens. (Colossians 1:16) The importance of  this birth goes beyond the thoughts of science and human philosophy it pronounces the deep love God has for His creation. This love came in the form of a baby who grew into a man which walked to Calvary and hung on a Cross. This love did not die on the Cross but He did and His love saved us from devastation and separation from a God who created us. Yes, the birth of God’s Son through the womb of a virgin called Mary brought life back into a right relationship with God. Jesus came to save mankind and He is God’s Only Begotten Son and Savior of the world.
